These days, children spend more and more time on their devices and less and less engaged in active play. This can be safer short-term, but long-term setting your child up for a life of relative inactivity can be very unhealthy. A far better idea is to make time for your child to engage in regular exercise. Not only will this keep them active and healthy, but by practicing using their body they can improve their physical abilities: their strength and dexterity. Watching TV and playing video games can be fun for an hour or so a day, but they don’t do as much to stimulate mind and body as free play. What is a suitable ‘kid workout’? There are plenty of things you can try. Active free play, like tag or riding bikes, or even building snowmen, can be the right combination of fun and healthy. If your children are the right age, a trip to the playground can be a great workout. Besides the walk itself, playing on the jungle gym or negotiating a kid-friendly obstacle course is fun and a very thorough workout. Remember to set a good example for your kids when you’re at the playground. Don’t just sit on a bench thumbing through your phone. Push them on the swings, or take the opportunity to slot in some workout time of your own. Do a set of jumping jacks, or fit in some lunges while you’re there. Engaging in physical activity alongside your children isn’t just a bonding activity, it also models behavior that they can carry with them into their adult lives.

When people hear the words ‘strength training program’ they likely think of resistance bands and weight training. That doesn’t have to be the case, however. Not all strength training exercises have to be like something out of a Rocky training montage. Some can even be fun. Has your child ever played crab soccer? It’s like soccer except played with your hands planted on the ground behind your back, so that you have to walk around like a crab. It’s a great way to exercise many muscle groups at once, burn energy, and have a fun time all at once. Cartwheels are another great way to gain strength, agility, and confidence, and kids love them. Jumping rope is one of the best ways to improve your fitness, and it’s excellent for developing leg strength. There are a million jump rope games out there old and new.
