LASG Level 4 Boys Place 4th at State Championships

Coaches Stepon Odajyan, Manvel Grigoryan and Darryl Thompson join the boys for a photo after a successful weekend.

Led by coach Stepon Odajyan, the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics Level 4 Boys team had an excellent showing at the 2015 SCMGA Team State Championships this weekend.

The boys came in fourth place, besting over 15 other teams from around the state and coming just short of earning a banner for the gym.

Everyone at LASG is extremely proud of the team for putting forth such a good effort and representing our gym this weekend!

LAGymnastics.com was able to catch up with Martin Pentchev Monday afternoon to talk about his experience with the team and how it felt to take fourth place. Read below for the exclusive interview!

Los Angeles School of Gymnastics: Great to speak with you, Martin! Congrats on the trophy win. What events did you and your teammates compete in at the State Championships this weekend?

Martin Pentchev: We competed in floor, high bar, rings, pommel horse, vault and p-bars.

LASG: What was your favorite event to compete in?

MP: My favorite event was p-bars!

LASG: How did it feel to come in fourth place?

MP: It felt really good. We got to go up on stage and they announced us and we ALMOST got a banner!

LASG: Was it motivating to know that you were that close to getting a banner?

MP: Yes. We are looking forward to working even harder for next time!

The Los Angeles School of Gymnastics would like to thank Gymnastics Olympica USA for hosting the event and giving our boys a chance to compete, and of course the Southern California Men?s Gymnastics Association for organizing the successful event.

Which LASG team will bring home the next trophy?! Stay tuned to LAGymnastics.com to find out!

LASG Meet the Gymnast: Frankie Silver

Frankie Silver is a 26-year-old dancer currently enrolled in classes here at LASG. Having just recently moved to LA from NYC, it didn?t take Frankie very long to find his place at the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics! Read below for a brief, fun interview that LASG did with Frankie about his experience at LASG and his pursuits in Los Angeles!

Los Angeles School of Gymnastics: So you are from New York City. When did you come to LA?

Frankie Silver: Two weeks ago!

LASG: How did you find out about the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics?

FS: I had a friend that went here and recommended it highly. As soon as I got out here I went on Google and searched for it. It was the first thing that came up and it had the best reviews, the facility looked great. And classes every day so it was convenient for me.

LASG: Did you practice gymnastics back in New York before you moved to LA? In college or high school?

FS: Never actually. I grew up dancing. And then I started training in New York City for about five years. Before that, I was actually with the Royal Ballet of London for about a year and a half. I did the Ailey (Alvin Ailey) Extension class for one summer.

LASG: So if you aren?t a gymnast per se, what are you using your training here at LASG for exactly? Just trying to keep in shape, or do you have a specific goal in mind?

FS: Definitely trying to keep in shape! It?s always a GREAT workout here. But at the moment I?m working on a music video, which is high in acro and dance, lots of tricks. Back in New York, it was all classical ballet, Broadway, I did a little bit of Broadway dancing on Mamma Mia, but out here it?s all commercial, with music videos and things that aren?t accessible in New York.

LASG: Can you tell us what music video you?re training for?

FS: It?s still under wraps right now but be on the lookout for Frankie Silver in the future!

@LAgymnastics Next time my legs will be straight!

Stay tuned to LAGymnastics.com for more LASG Meet the Gymnast profiles!

Gymnastics Golden Girl Gabby Douglas Returns to Team USA

Here at the Los Angeles School of Gymnastics we take our Team USA competitions very seriously! After all, many of our coaches and students are affiliated with Team USA and other international gymnastics programs.

Team USA announced this week that former gold medalists Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman are set to return to Team USA to compete for the 2015 City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy. This is great news for all Team USA fans, as it will be the first competition that Douglas will compete in for USA since London 2012, where she became the fourth US woman to win the overall Olympic competition.

The City of Jesolo Trophy competition starts tomorrow, March 25 and runs until Sunday, March 29. Last year the US nearly swept all gold medals, missing only one category, the senior beam title, which was claimed by Andreea Munteanu of Romania.

With Douglas returning to Team USA, do you think the US has a chance to sweep all gold medals at Jesolo this week? Tell us how many medals Team USA will win on Twitter and mention @LAGymnastics!

The Benefits of Gymnastics

Gymnastics training can begin at a very young age and last well into adult life. The benefits of this sport are vast, including both mental and physical advantages.

Benefits:

Body

Gymnastics increases strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, and endurance.  The utilization of so many muscles results in gymnasts being of the strongest of all athletes, in terms of total body strength. Gymnastics encourages athletes to move and flex their bodies in new ways, focusing on all muscle areas. Balance is necessary for almost every aspect of gymnastics, promoting excellent core strength.

Mind

Because gymnastics covers such a large scope of activities, cognitive learning is improved in gymnasts who dedicate themselves to this sport. Mental focus is extremely important when practicing and competing. Learning any skill is good for the brain, but with gymnastics touching on such a wide variety of movements and practices, the mental benefits are even higher.

Overall Health

Physical activity of any kind is great for overall health. It encourages people to get off the couch and get active in their life. A sport like gymnastics requires athletes to build significant muscle strength to move and lift their bodies. This, not only increases fitness and health, but also helps participants be more aware of their bodies in general. Knowing your body is the first step to achieving great health.

Gymnastics will teach you great social skills, as you work with a team and coaches to achieve the greatest success. There are invaluable life lessons waiting to be learned about your body, mind, and your environment.
